The city fortification encompasses four corner towers, multiple intermediate towers, and sections of defensive walls measuring eight meters in height.

Construction of the city walls began in the last decade of the 12th century, following the city's foundation measurements conducted at Hauptplatz in 1192.

The fortification sections demonstrate various construction techniques, including opus spicatum masonry, which reflects medieval building methods in Central Europe.

Several parts of the original walls remain visible on all four sides of the city, including the Reckturm tower and sections near the former Wiener Gate.

Between 1551 and 1557, master builder Johann Tscherte constructed vaulted cellars as casemates for weapons storage at the southwest corner.
