Schloss Niederkreuzstetten

Schloss Niederkreuzstetten is a castle with four wings enclosing a central courtyard. The structure is surrounded by wide defensive moats and fortified walls that protect the entire complex.

The fortress was first documented in 1265 and changed hands several times over the centuries. The Hoyos family acquired it in 1622 and retained ownership for 259 years.

The stone bridge at the eastern entrance bears carved dates from 1680 and 1795, marking different building phases. These inscriptions show how the structure was modified and renewed over time.

The castle is today privately owned by the Wenckheim family, who have carried out extensive renovations. The grounds include generous park areas surrounding the property.

During crises in 1663 and 1683, the fortress sheltered the surrounding population who sought refuge behind its walls. This role reveals how vital it was to the local community.
