Wurzerhof, Heritage farm museum in Außervillgraten, Austria
Wurzerhof is a farm complex with around 15 buildings in the Winkeltal valley, including a residence, chapel, washhouse, grain mill, sawmill, and blacksmith workshop. The layout shows how a traditional property with multiple craft functions was organized and used.
First recorded in 1433, the property operated as a self-sufficient farm with its own mill, smithy, bakery, and carpentry operations. It employed around 30 craftspeople, making it an important economic center in the valley.
The property carries a name rooted in its past as a working farm with craft traditions. Today visitors can see inside the buildings how people once worked and lived, with tools and workshops that still reflect those earlier times.
The grounds are accessible during the warmer months and work well for a walk through the various buildings. Wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time to explore the different workshops and spaces at your own pace.
The farm raises uncommon animal breeds like Carinthian spectacled sheep and Highland cattle while practicing certified organic and biodynamic agriculture. These contemporary sustainability standards blend with the traditional craft methods preserved from earlier centuries.
