Altes Rathaus, Leoben, Medieval town hall in Leoben, Austria.
Altes Rathaus in Leoben is a medieval town hall with a striking pentagonal tower that rises above the building. The tower has clocks on each side and was later enhanced with a coat of arms frieze on the western side depicting lands under Habsburg rule.
The building was created in 1485 from three medieval houses and served as the seat of city government for a long time. When a new town hall was completed in 1973, it lost this function but retained its historical importance.
The town square's name reflects the long connection between the city and iron production. Visitors can study the facade details that tell of this industrial past.
The building is easy to see from the outside and the tower is visible from various points in the city. The eastern section was reopened as a public events venue in 2022 and is accessible to visitors during events.
The facade features an iron-eating ostrich symbol that hints at an old legend about the power of iron. This heraldic creature humorously embodies the city's industrial identity and is a visual puzzle for observant visitors.
