Jakobskreuz, Summit cross and observation tower on Buchensteinwand Mountain, Austria
The Jakobskreuz is a cross-shaped observation tower on Buchensteinwand Mountain at 1,456 meters elevation, with multiple platforms for viewing in different directions. The steel structure features various levels and lookout points where visitors can see surrounding mountain ranges.
The first structure was built in 1834 as a wooden tower that required climbing ladders, while today's steel construction replaced this earlier version sometime later. The original build was commissioned by Count Joseph of Stolberg-Stolberg.
The cross carries religious significance connected to pilgrimage traditions honoring Saint James. Visitors experience a blend of spiritual meaning and mountain views that holds importance for people in this region.
The Buchensteinwand Gondola carries visitors directly to the tower, and elevators provide access to different viewing levels within the structure. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and take extra care during windy or rainy weather, as the observation platforms are open to the elements.
Each of the four viewing rooms inside faces a different mountain range—Loferer Mountains, Leoganger Steinberge, Wildseeloder Peak, and Kitzbüheler Horn. This design allows visitors to see four distinct mountain landscapes from within a single structure.
