Soboth Reservoir, Speichersee im Dreiländereck Kärnten-Slowenien-Steiermark
Soboth Reservoir is a mountain lake in Styria with fjord-like bays and clear water covering more than 80 hectares. Situated at about 1080 meters in elevation, it is fed by two mountain streams from the southern Koralpe range.
The reservoir was built in the early 1990s to supply water for a nearby hydroelectric power plant called Koralpe. The dam was designed to create a natural-looking mountain lake that could serve visitors from the start.
The name Soboth reflects the local mountain heritage of the region. The reservoir serves as a gathering place where people come to swim, picnic, and enjoy outdoor recreation in a quiet setting throughout the year.
The area around the lake has well-maintained paths, toilets, bars, and spaces for sunbathing and picnicking, plus a camping site for tents and caravans. Parking areas are marked and charge fees from early morning until early evening, with yearly passes or hourly rates available.
The water is usually between 6 and 7 degrees Celsius but stays unfrozen in winter, suitable for paddling and water sports enthusiasts who want to enjoy the silence and feel as if they are in a Canadian or Norwegian landscape. The deepest spots reach over 80 meters, with steep banks dropping sharply into the water.
