Former Gallow hill from Bregenz, Historical execution site in Bregenz, Austria.
The Galgenbihl was an execution site near Bregenz situated at about 415 meters elevation on the southern edge of Lochau. The location lay close to Lake Constance and was accessible from the main road connecting Lochau and Bregenz.
The execution site emerged as a symbol of local judicial authority and was used for centuries. The final execution occurred in 1834, marking the end of this function.
The name refers to the gallows structure that once stood here as a place of public judgment. Today little remains visible in the landscape to suggest this dark chapter of local history.
The site now sits within a residential area and shows few outward signs of its past, as buildings have replaced the original grounds. Visitors should know that public access to the former execution area is not available.
In 1643 the site was transferred from the County to the town itself, a significant shift in local judicial control. This administrative change reflected the growing independence and authority of the town.
