Schloss Pixendorf, Renaissance castle in Michelhausen, Austria.
Schloss Pixendorf is a water castle in Michelhausen featuring four corner bastions and a rectangular layout. The structure was originally surrounded by a moat system that provided defensive protection.
The castle was built in the 16th century when Christoph III Rueber demolished an older fortress to construct a Renaissance water castle on the site. During the Napoleonic Wars, it served as a military hospital and later experienced periods of decline.
The name derives from the Pixendorf family, a noble lineage connected to the estate's development. Visitors can still recognize traces of the historical gardens that once surrounded this aristocratic residence.
The site is best approached on foot, and the flat landscape makes exploration straightforward. Allow time to examine the exterior closely and observe the architectural details of the facade.
A brewery operated in the eastern section of the castle from the late 1600s until a fire ended production in 1893. The brewing tradition returned to the site in 2006 when a new small brewery was established there.
