Berlaymont building, Government building in European Quarter, Brussels, Belgium

The Berlaymont building features a cross-shaped tower with four extending wings, rising 14 floors above ground in modernist architectural style.

The building, constructed between 1963 and 1969, replaced the former Berlaymont Convent and became the headquarters of the European Commission in 1967.

The structure represents the physical center of European Union governance, hosting thousands of civil servants who shape policies affecting member states.

The renovated building contains offices for 3000 employees, meeting rooms at the top floors, and facilities including restaurants and television studios in the basement.

During its extensive renovation from 1997 to 2004, the entire structure underwent asbestos removal and received modern technological upgrades.
