Saint Julien Memorial

The granite memorial features a Canadian soldier with bowed head and shoulders, standing 11 meters tall beside the road from Ypres to Bruges.

The monument commemorates 18,000 Canadian soldiers who defended against the first German gas attacks during the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915.

Architect Frederick Chapman Clemesha incorporated granite from Vosges quarries and commissioned sculptors in Brussels to create the Canadian soldier figure.

The memorial site includes designated parking facilities and remains accessible to visitors throughout all hours of the day and night.

The gardens surrounding the memorial contain soil from different regions of Canada, representing the national unity during World War I.
