Cathedral of Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Catholic cathedral in Pinsk, Belarus
The Cathedral of Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Catholic cathedral and minor basilica built in baroque style in the heart of Pinsk, Belarus. Its white facade, symmetrical layout, and a pipe organ from 1836 installed inside define the character of the building.
A Franciscan monastery with a wooden church was established here in the 14th century, laying the foundation for everything that followed. From the 16th century onward, the site was rebuilt several times until the current stone church took its final form.
The cathedral houses Alfred Romer's painting Madonna of Pinsk, which has been a focus of local devotion for generations. During services, the Catholic community of Pinsk gathers here in a way that makes the building feel very much alive and in active use.
The cathedral is open to visitors during religious services and there is no entry fee. A weekday visit allows you to take in the baroque details and interior decoration at a relaxed pace.
During the 18th century reconstruction, walls from an earlier damaged church were incorporated into the new structure rather than demolished. Visitors who look closely at the masonry can spot stones from different periods sitting side by side within the same walls.
