Łyskaŭ Castle

Łyskaŭ Castle is a stone fortress in Zielianievicki Sieĺsaviet, Belarus, positioned along the Neman River and defined by three defensive towers and remains of a barbican. The structure shows different building phases, with earlier wooden elements later replaced by stone construction.

Jan Kiszka founded the fortress in 1581 with timber walls and a stone tower, while Janusz Radziwiĺĺ later added three more towers. This gradual strengthening reflects the growing security concerns of the region during that turbulent time.

The castle transformed from a Calvinist stronghold into a Gothic Revival residence, showing how religious beliefs and architectural tastes shifted over centuries. The building's changes tell the story of those who controlled and shaped it during different periods.

Visitors reach the castle grounds through guided tours organized by local authorities, with seasonal opening hours that vary throughout the year. It helps to check current availability in advance to ensure you can visit when it suits your schedule.

The fortress endured the 1655 Cossack uprising led by Ivan Zolotarenko, with a barbican and tower sustaining damage while other structures were lost. This survival shows how the medieval construction could withstand siege attacks despite significant destruction.
