Newfoundland and Labrador, Island and mainland in Atlantic Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador forms the most easterly province of Canada. On Newfoundland island, the Norse archaeological site L'Anse aux Meadows is the reputed settlement of Viking explorer Leif Erikson.
The Province was self-governing from 1855–1934, but due to economic distress, it relinquished its independence to return to direct rule by Britain.
The place boasts a rich history of indigenous cultures such as the Beothuk, and traces of their presence can be found in artefacts and stories.
The capital city, St. John's, is known for its colourful row houses and it's the easternmost point of North America.
The province has its own dictionary: The Dictionary of Newfoundland English that includes words not used elsewhere.
