Welcome to Cedar Island, a small but historically significant island located in the Niagara River near the Canadian shore. This uninhabited and elongated island was once occupied by Isaac Swayze in 1804, who could not build anything but his wooden house, leading to the island being undeveloped. Over time, strong currents caused erosion which reduced the island to two acres. In 1857, Samuel Street obtained the lease for Cedar Island and built a fifty-foot wooden observation tower on top of a house. From this tower, visitors could enjoy stunning views of the Horseshoe Falls and the surrounding area. In 1905, the Canadian Niagara Power Company built a hydroelectric generating plant on Cedar Island, which became known as the William Birch Power Station. Unfortunately, due to the power plant, Cedar Island became nonexistent as a result of the land filling. However, remnants of the island can still be seen where the power station is located. Visitors to Cedar Island can learn about its fascinating history and explore the area around the William Birch Power Station. The power station itself is an impressive sight and offers a glimpse into the technology that powers the Niagara region. For those interested in nature, the surrounding area is home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, fish, and other aquatic creatures.
