Disentis Abbey, Benedictine abbey in Disentis/Mustér, Switzerland
The stone monastery complex features a prominent bell tower, white facade, and sits against the backdrop of the Swiss Alps in Graubünden canton.
Founded in 614 by Placidus and Sigisbert, the abbey survived multiple destructions, including attacks by Avars in 670 and Saracens around 940.
The monastery maintains a gymnasium and boarding school educating over 250 students while preserving centuries of Swiss religious traditions and manuscripts.
Visitors can reach the abbey by train to Disentis station, with guided tours available through the local tourism office throughout the year.
The abbey holds the status of Imperial Abbey, granted by Charlemagne in 800, allowing independence from local lords throughout its history.
