Bischofstein Castle, Medieval castle ruin near Sissach, Switzerland.
The remains of Bischofstein Castle include stone walls, a tower, residential palace sections, and gate buildings situated on Chienberg mountain at 698 meters elevation.
Constructed around 1250 by the Lords of Eptingen after acquiring land from the Itkon family, the castle experienced severe damage during the 1356 earthquake.
The castle ruins maintain class B status in the Swiss cultural property inventory, representing regional architectural practices and defensive strategies from the medieval period.
Visitors can reach the archaeological site through marked hiking trails and footpaths connecting from Sissacherfluh to the castle location at coordinates 47°28'29"N 7°49'37"E.
Archaeological excavations between 1914 and 1938 revealed the complete structure, leading to preservation efforts that allow current observation of medieval construction techniques.
