Ebenrain Château, Late Baroque manor house in Sissach, Switzerland.
Ebenrain Château is a Late Baroque manor house featuring a symmetrical design with a central building flanked by two side pavilions. The property sits within grounds planted with mature linden trees that frame the architectural composition.
A Basel merchant named Martin Bachofen commissioned architect Samuel Werenfels to design this residence between 1774 and 1776 as a summer retreat and hunting lodge. The construction period coincided with an era when wealthy Basel traders invested in substantial country estates outside the city.
The château houses temporary art exhibitions and concerts while maintaining its status as a Class A Swiss cultural property of national significance.
The estate now houses an agricultural school that operates on the grounds and can be visited by arrangement. Check ahead regarding access arrangements and opening times, as the site serves active educational functions beyond viewing the historic architecture.
Unlike other Basel country houses that were used only seasonally through autumn, this hunting lodge remained in use through winter and into January. This extended season reflects how central hunting activities were to the owner's lifestyle on this estate.
