Alte Thurbrücke, Medieval stone bridge in Bischofszell, Switzerland

The Alte Thurbrücke spans 116 meters across the Thur River with eight arches made of sandstone and tuff stone blocks.

The construction of this bridge, completed in 1487, replaced a wooden structure that had existed upstream since at least 1325.

Local stories tell of a noblewoman funding the bridge's construction after her sons drowned, requesting prayers instead of collecting tolls.

The bridge underwent extensive restoration between 1999 and 2006, including replacement of stone blocks and waterproofing of the roadway.

The bridge follows a curved path due to the strategic placement of pillars on natural rock formations in the riverbed.
