Shandong, Province in East China

Shandong is a coastal province of the People's Republic of China and has played a major role in Chinese history from the beginning of Chinese civilization.

It was the site of Confucius’ birth, his philosophical development, and the formation of his doctrines in the fifth and fourth centuries BCE.

The province is famed for being home to Mount Tai, one of the most sacred mountains in Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.

Known as the 'Fruit and veg basket', Shandong is an important agricultural sector with an abundance of food production including wheat, apples, and seafood.

Shandong, unlike other provinces, retains its ancient name, which literally means 'Mountains' East'.
