Jin Mao Tower, Skyscraper in Shanghai, China.
The Jin Mao Tower is an 88-story landmark skyscraper in the Lujiazui area of the Pudong district of Shanghai, China.
Completed in 1999, it was the tallest building in China until 2007 when it was surpassed by the Shanghai World Financial Center, which is located next to the building.
The design of the building's structure is based on the Chinese pagoda and the number '8', a number associated with prosperity in Chinese culture.
The tower houses offices and the Grand Hyatt Shanghai hotel, which at the time of completion was the highest hotel in the world.
Its postmodern form, whose complexity rises as it ascends, draws on traditional Chinese architecture such as the tiered pagoda, gently stepping back to create a rhythmic pattern as it rises.
