Tanzhe Temple

Tanzhe Temple is a Buddhist complex in the Western Hills outside Beijing, occupying extensive grounds with hundreds of buildings arranged across the landscape. The site displays traditional Chinese architectural styles spanning multiple periods, with halls and courtyards organized according to classical design principles.

The temple was established in the early medieval period and grew into an important Buddhist center over subsequent centuries. It underwent expansions and renovations across multiple dynasties, with rulers and officials recognizing its spiritual importance to the region.

The temple's name comes from the two ancient ginkgo trees that have stood in the rear courtyard for centuries, deeply woven into local spiritual life. Visitors and worshippers come to experience the quiet rhythm of prayer and reflection at the many smaller shrines throughout the grounds.

The grounds are hilly and spread out, so wear comfortable shoes and allow extra time for exploration. The best seasons to visit are spring and autumn, when weather is mild and pathways are easiest to navigate.

Few visitors know about the ancient stone-carving workshop where monks crafted ornamental fountains and vessels for centuries. This artisanal heritage appears in carefully carved details scattered throughout the complex.
