Banz Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Bad Staffelstein, Germany

The white limestone walls of Banz Abbey rise above the Main River valley, featuring a church with elliptical interior spaces and curved lines.

Countess Alberada of Schweinfurt and Count Hermann established this monastery in 1070, which remained active until its secularization in 1803.

The abbey contains notable artworks, including ceiling frescoes by Melchior Steidl and sculptures created by Balthasar Esterbauer in the church interior.

The Hanns Seidel Foundation now operates the abbey as a conference center, offering guided tours of the historical buildings and Egyptian collections.

The abbey church, completed in 1719, utilizes a series of connecting ellipses instead of traditional right angles in its architectural design.
