Burg Wittelsbach

The archaeological remains include stone walls stretching 200 meters in length and reaching heights of 3.2 meters, with a cistern shaft in the center.

Count Otto IV established the castle as the seat of House Wittelsbach in 1119, moving from Scheyern Castle and transforming his former residence into an abbey.

The Gothic church Maria vom Siege stands on the former castle grounds, built in the 15th century to mark the historical significance of this location.

Visitors can explore the excavated foundation walls while following informational panels that detail the castle's layout and architectural features from different periods.

Archaeological excavations between 1978 and 1980 revealed that the castle's stones were systematically removed for other construction projects rather than destroyed in 1209.
