Eldena Abbey, Medieval monastery ruins in Greifswald, Germany
The remaining walls of Eldena Abbey display elements of Gothic architecture, with high arches and detailed stone carvings standing against the landscape.
Founded in 1199 by Danish Cistercian monks, the monastery gained wealth through salt trade and contributed to the establishment of the city of Greifswald.
The ruins served as a central subject for painter Caspar David Friedrich, who created numerous artworks featuring the structure between 1809 and 1825.
The monastery grounds include walking paths through a park designed by Peter Joseph Lenné, offering visitors year-round access without entrance fees.
The remains of the west facade maintain the exact architectural features that inspired Friedrich's renowned painting Abbey in the Oak Forest.
