Christoph 47, Emergency medical helicopter in Greifswald, Germany
The DRF Luftrettung air ambulance operates throughout the day from the University Medical Center Greifswald with a pilot, emergency physician, and paramedic on board.
The rescue helicopter service began operations in 1992 and transformed its fleet from a Bölkow Bo 105 to an Airbus Helicopters H145 D-3 with a five-blade rotor in 2022.
The helicopter carries the radio call sign Christoph 47, following the German tradition of naming rescue helicopters after Saint Christopher, protector of travelers.
The medical team responds to emergencies when ground ambulances cannot reach patients quickly enough or when aerial transport becomes necessary due to injury severity.
Since 2020, Christoph 47 performs night missions, reaching 1,612 operations in 2021, the highest number since its establishment.
