Oder–Havel Canal

The Oder-Havel Canal extends 82.8 kilometers through Germany, connecting the Oder and Havel rivers with a width of 33 meters and multiple locks.

Construction of this essential waterway began in 1908 under the name Hohenzollern Canal and reached completion in 1914, replacing most of the former Finow Canal.

The canal system represents German engineering excellence through its integration of water management, transportation infrastructure, and regional development near Berlin.

Commercial vessels up to 1,000 tonnes can navigate the waterway, which serves as a vital transportation link between Berlin and the Baltic Sea port of Szczecin.

The Niederfinow boat lift, constructed in 1934, raises vessels 36 meters vertically in a massive caisson measuring 85 meters by 12 meters.
