Klosterruine Frankenthal, Romanesque church ruins in Frankenthal, Germany

The Erkenbert ruins contain remains of a three-nave pillar basilica, including the lower section of the west facade and the rood screen.

The church complex, founded in 1119 by Erkenbert of Frankenthal, was elevated to abbey status in 1140 and consecrated to Saint Mary Magdalene.

The scriptorium began producing the Frankenthal Bible in 1148, marking a significant period of literary and religious development at the monastery.

The ruins, located at Rathausplatz in central Frankenthal, now serve as an open-air venue for theater performances, film screenings, and concerts.

The column portal of the western facade displays intricate leaf ornaments and animal figures, sharing formal similarities with the northern portal of Worms Cathedral.
