Untertor, Medieval city gate in Büdingen, Germany

The Untertor features two defensive towers with stone domes, multiple crossbow slits, and a decorated parapet with fish-bladder tracery patterns and lion gargoyles.

Built in 1503 as part of Count Ludwig II's fortification plans, the gate included a drawbridge over the moat to strengthen the city's defensive capabilities.

The gate earned its Jerusalem Gate nickname when Protestant refugees in 1521 referenced it as their Jerusalem upon arriving at Büdingen for sanctuary.

The structure now contains the Sandrosen Museum and stands at the western entrance of Büdingen's historic old town, marking the beginning of medieval architecture exploration.

The tower's eighteen shooting positions were designed for seated archers, with slits measuring 20 centimeters high and providing a 90-degree horizontal firing range.
