Mariä Himmelfahrt

Mariä Himmelfahrt is a Catholic pilgrimage church in Buggenhofen, featuring a plain exterior with an octagonal tower. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered with elaborate Baroque frescoes and Rococo decorations that draw the eye throughout the space.

The church began after a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary was found in 1471, which made it an important pilgrimage site. The current building was constructed between 1678 and 1680, then underwent several repairs and improvements.

The interior holds roughly 191 votive images from the 18th and 19th centuries, showing how local people expressed their faith and gratitude over time. These hand-painted works tell personal stories of visitors who sought help or gave thanks for answered prayers.

The church sits near the Geopark Ries and connects to several cycling routes that visitors can explore. The surrounding area works well for combining a visit to the site with biking or walking through the region.

The ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Enderle from 1769 show the Coronation of Mary surrounded by figures from four continents. These careful frescoes stand out for their thoughtful composition and Latin inscriptions that highlight Marian virtues.
