Herzogsschloss, Medieval ducal castle in Straubing, Germany
The Herzogsschloss stands along the Danube River with two residential towers connected by a grand hall featuring Gothic architectural elements.
Duke Albrecht I initiated the construction of this castle in 1356, establishing it as the residence of the Wittelsbach duchy of Bavaria-Straubing-Holland until 1425.
The castle courtyard transforms into a performance venue every four years for the Agnes Bernauer Festival, presenting theatrical productions about the duke's wife.
The castle currently houses the local tax office, city library, and municipal archives, making it an administrative center for Straubing residents.
The Rittersaal, constructed around 1423, ranks among Germany's largest medieval banquet halls, demonstrating the architectural grandeur of its time.
