Kampnagel, Cultural center in Barmbek district, Hamburg, Germany
Kampnagel is a cultural center in the Barmbek district of Hamburg, Germany, housing six performance halls and stages for events. The spaces accommodate audiences from 150 to 2,500 people and serve as venues for performances, exhibitions, and other cultural gatherings.
The site began in 1865 as the Nagel & Kaemp ironworks, producing ship cranes until production ended in the 1980s. Artists then moved into the empty halls, and the area gradually transformed into a venue for performing arts.
The name Kampnagel combines the surnames of the original factory founders and keeps their industrial legacy alive in every performance space. Visitors today experience a wide program of dance, theater, and concerts that brings artists from many countries to its stages.
The center sits on Jarrestraße 20 and connects easily by public transport. Alongside the stages, visitors find rehearsal rooms, a restaurant, and a cinema on site.
Old hall cranes from the factory years still stand inside the performance spaces and recall the earlier use for shipbuilding. These steel structures sometimes appear directly in stage designs during productions.
