Wittichen Abbey, Medieval monastery in Schenkenzell, Germany.

The monastery stands in a narrow valley of the Kleine Kinzig stream, surrounded by the dense forests of the Black Forest region.

Saint Luitgard established the Poor Clares monastery in 1324 with 33 sisters, receiving support from the counts of Geroldseck and Queen Agnes of Hungary.

The baroque church contains the tomb of Saint Luitgard and the cemetery holds the graves of several Counts of Urslingen from medieval times.

Circular hiking trails around the monastery grounds connect to educational paths that explain the former mining activities in the Wittichen region.

The Langer Bau, a 17th-century residence for abbesses, remains as one of the few preserved buildings after the monastery's secularization in 1803.

Inception: 1325
