Burg Wolfach, Medieval castle ruin in Wolfach, Germany.
Burg Wolfach is a castle ruin perched on a steep hill at 318 meters elevation, with a round tower and sections of ring wall still standing. The structure overlooks a river valley and can be seen from several points across the surrounding region.
The castle was founded around 1030 under the Lords of Wolfach. It passed to the Fürstenberg family after Count Friedrich married Udilhild von Wolfach, the heiress of the estate.
The ruins take their name from the settlement that grew around the Wolf River below. Today the site serves as a landmark that hikers recognize and reference when navigating the surrounding forest.
The ruins are accessible via marked hiking trails that connect to broader Black Forest path networks. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and take care on the steep terrain.
In 1778, stones from the castle were removed and used to reinforce the banks of the Wolf River against flooding. This shows how parts of the structure found new purpose in local river management after its decline.
