Black Forest Open Air Museum

The Black Forest Open Air Museum features six complete farmhouses from different periods showcasing traditional regional architecture. Each building is furnished with historical tools, kitchen equipment, and household items that reflect how families lived and worked.

The Vogtsbauernhof farmhouse from 1612 serves as the original core building around which the museum developed. The site officially opened as a museum in 1963 to preserve how rural communities lived in the Black Forest.

The craft workshops demonstrate how people traditionally made textiles, dairy products, and wooden items in this region. You can watch artisans practice these skills today and understand how essential they were to daily life.

The museum is easily reached by train at the dedicated Gutach Freilichtmuseum station and sits within walking distance. Plan to spend two to three hours exploring the buildings and watching demonstrations, though you can extend this time based on your interests.

The grounds feature a medicinal herb garden with around 130 plant species that people once used for healing remedies and treatments. This collection reveals what natural resources were available to help people stay healthy in past times.
