Volkenrodaer Eiche

The Volkenroda Oak, also known as Königseiche, measures 9.5 meters in circumference and reaches a height of 23 meters with a crown diameter of 16 meters.

The oak tree has endured numerous challenges since the 12th century, including a lightning strike in 1871 that caused it to fall and catch fire during peace celebrations.

The tree serves as a gathering point for religious services and community celebrations, particularly during Pentecost, continuing a tradition that spans many generations.

The oak tree stands 300 meters northeast of Volkenroda at 285 meters above sea level, surrounded by a protective fence to prevent damage to its root system.

Scientific measurements since 1821 show the oak grows approximately 1.53 centimeters in circumference annually, slower than comparable trees of its species.
