Christus-Pavillon, Modern church building in Körner, Germany
The Christus-Pavillon is a modern church building in Körner featuring glass and steel construction with a central cubic sacred space at its core. A rectangular cloister walkway wraps around this inner sanctum, forming the building's outer structure.
The building was originally designed for Expo 2000 in Hanover and relocated to Volkenroda Monastery in Thuringia during 2001. It was moved there to replace the monastery's missing nave and has served this function ever since.
The pavilion brings together natural and mechanical elements in its windows, combining wooden discs, gears, pinecones, and old audio cassettes. These materials create a visual dialogue between the organic and the industrial that visitors notice as they walk inside.
The building hosts religious services, weddings, community meetings, and cultural events throughout the year. It is best to check ahead which activities are planned to get the most out of your visit.
The building features innovative stone glass material in its facade, a pioneering use of this architectural technique. This experimental approach shows how traditional building materials can be reimagined in unexpected ways.
