Schmalzturm, Medieval defense tower in Landsberg am Lech, Germany.
The seven-story gate tower rises at the highest point of the main square, featuring late Gothic lily friezes and a distinctive tent roof with lanterns.
Built after 1270 as the first eastern city gate, the tower received its current architectural form in 1458 during the construction of new fortification walls.
Market women traditionally gathered near the tower to sell their goods, particularly lard, which gave the structure its name Schmalzturm, meaning lard tower.
The tower contains a clock mechanism and bells, while the Sparkasse Landsberg-Diessen bank now occupies its interior spaces for modern business operations.
A cannonball remains mounted above the tower passage as physical evidence of the 1796 occupation by Napoleon's forces during their military campaign.
