Westphalie-Lippe

Westphalie-Lippe covers an expansive region of 20,210 square kilometers, home to 7.9 million residents across three governmental districts: Arnsberg, Detmold, and Münster.

The territory emerged from the merger of the Province of Westphalia and Lippe in 1947, following the British military administration's reorganization of northwestern German regions after World War II.

The region maintains distinct traditions through the Westphalian dialect, a variant of Low German, while displaying a mixture of Catholic and Protestant influences in its communities.

The territory contains 26 districts and independent cities, each with local governments managing services, infrastructure, and administrative responsibilities for their respective populations.

The white horse on a red field, known as the Westphalian Steed, represents the regional identity and appears on official emblems throughout the territory.
