Saint Mary Church

Saint Mary Church is a Protestant house of worship in Stadtilm featuring a striking double tower facade with round-arched columned portals and intricate Gothic windows in its stone structure. The interior was furnished after a devastating fire with a broad late-Baroque altarpiece from 1788 and a powerful organ with 32 stops built in 1903.

The original building dates from the 12th century and was consecrated in 1235, but a fire in 1780 destroyed everything except the outer walls. The rebuild followed classical construction patterns and furnishings were renewed in the style of the era.

The name reflects devotion to Mary, which shaped the design of many medieval churches. Today visitors encounter the Baroque interior furnishings that were created anew after the fire of 1780.

The building is easily accessible from the outside and the facade architecture can be explored from various angles. Visitors should check if interior access is possible outside of services, as worship schedules may affect regular visiting hours.

A wooden staircase in the south tower chamber was installed during the 1899 renovation and shows the era's desire to restore Gothic elements. This staircase remains one of the lesser-noticed details that visitors may discover while exploring the towers.
