Marienkirche, Medieval church in Oberferrieden, Germany
The Marienkirche features Gothic wall paintings in its choir area, with the vault displaying four Evangelists represented as symbolic animals and Christ as King.
The earliest documentation of the church dates to 1179 when Pope Alexander III recognized a church in Varriden as property of the Eichstätt cathedral chapter.
The wall paintings showcase scenes from Mary's life, including her death, Jesus's birth, the crucifixion, and her meeting with the Three Wise Men.
Regular services occur on major feast days and the second and fourth Sundays of each month, with the church accommodating 130 seats in the nave.
In 1473, the church and rectory were enclosed by a high wall with gates and towers, serving as a refuge for villagers during periods of danger.
