Agios Minas Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Heraklion, Greece
The central dome of Agios Minas Cathedral rises above its cruciform structure, covering a total surface area of 1,350 square meters.
Construction of the cathedral started in 1862 and faced interruptions during the Cretan Revolution between 1866 and 1869, before completion in 1895.
The cathedral interior displays numerous religious frescoes, including the central dome depicting Christ Pantocrator and multiple Orthodox Christian icons.
The cathedral stands on a large square in central Heraklion, making it accessible to visitors through nearby public transportation and walking paths.
A smaller church dedicated to Saint Minas sits adjacent to the main cathedral, serving as the original Metropolis of Crete after Ottoman rule.
