French Third Republic, Historical period in France
The French Third Republic was the system of government adopted by France from 1870, when the Second French Empire collapsed during the Franco-Prussian War, until 10 July 1940 after the invasion of France by Nazi Germany
This political era marked a return to democracy and saw various legal reforms and social changes.
Offical recognition was given to trade unions and workers' rights during this time.
Due to its unique nature, scholars usually divide it into three periods: the conservative era (1871 to 1893), the relatively calm and prosperous mid-period (1894 to 1914) and an unstable period (1914 to 1940).
Hopelessly divided between Monarchists and Republicans at first, it survived severe internal and external challenges to become one of the long-lasting regimes in French history.
