Château de Montgilbert

The fortress stands on a rocky hillock above the Vareille brook, featuring two concentric walls with round towers at each corner of the inner fortification.

Built around 1250 during Saint Louis's reign by the Saint-Gérand family, the castle underwent modifications in the 15th century to accommodate artillery batteries.

The castle demonstrates the evolution of medieval military architecture through its combination of defensive features and residential spaces for noble inhabitants.

Visitors can access the ruins throughout the year via a small parking area at the bottom, followed by a steep climb to the entrance.

Since 1974, volunteer groups have actively participated in preservation efforts, working to stabilize and maintain the remaining structures of this 13th-century fortress.
