Description
Château-Chinon is a small commune situated on a hilltop at approximately 534 meters elevation in the Nièvre department. The town functions as a sub-prefecture and sits within the Morvan Regional Natural Park in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
History
The town grew around a fortress strategically positioned between Burgundy and the Kingdom of France during medieval times. From the original castle, only the Notre-Dame gate from 1475 remains visible today.
Culture
The town's name comes from the medieval fortress that once dominated the hilltop. The colorful fountain by Niki de Saint Phalle on the main square is the first modern art piece visitors encounter when entering the town center.
