Battle of Fort Driant, World War II fortification near Metz, France

The US Third Army under General Patton launched multiple attacks against the German-held fort between September and October 1944, facing strong resistance.
Fort Driant contains military engineering elements from both French and German defensive designs, reflecting the changing powers in the Lorraine region.
The fort sits 8 kilometers southwest of Metz, featuring underground passages, observation posts, and infantry trenches spanning the defensive complex.
Despite extensive bombing by P-47 Thunderbolts and ground assaults, the reinforced concrete structure remained largely undamaged throughout the entire siege.
