Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa, Benedictine abbey in Codalet, France
The Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa abbey stands at the base of Mount Canigou, featuring a pre-Romanesque church and a Romanesque-Lombard tower from the 10th century.
Founded in 878 after floods destroyed the initial monastery of Saint-André d'Eixalada, surviving monks established this new religious settlement in the Cuxa valley.
The abbey includes a large 12th-century cloister, with sections of its carved marble capitals now displayed at The Cloisters museum in New York City.
Visitors can explore the site through guided tours offered in French, German, English, Catalan, Spanish, and Italian, with reduced admission rates for students.
The Pablo Casals Festival takes place annually in the abbey, continuing a musical tradition that began in 1950 when the cellist first performed there.
