Meuse/Haute Marne Underground Research Laboratory

The Meuse/Haute Marne Underground Research Laboratory extends 500 meters beneath the surface, containing extensive tunnels for studying geological formations and waste storage capabilities.

Construction of this scientific facility began in November 1999 under the direction of Andra, the French nuclear waste management authority, to research deep geological disposal methods.

The laboratory maintains connections with local communities through educational programs that explain nuclear waste management processes and environmental protection measures to residents.

Two main shafts provide access to the underground sections, with surface facilities spanning 170,000 square meters that include research buildings and equipment transport systems.

The laboratory studies Kimmeridgian claystone formations to determine their effectiveness in storing radioactive materials for thousands of years under controlled conditions.
