Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, Gothic church in Latin Quarter, France

Saint-Étienne-du-Mont combines Gothic and Renaissance architecture, featuring elaborate stone carvings, a spiral staircase, and stained glass windows from the 16th century.

Construction of the church began in 1494 under Jean Turbillon's direction and continued for over a century through religious wars and funding challenges.

The church holds regular classical music concerts and contains the remains of Saint Genevieve, while maintaining its role as an active religious center.

Visitors can access the church through Paris Metro stations Luxembourg or Cardinal Lemoine, with guided tours available during specified opening hours.

The church contains the only remaining rood screen in Paris, a carved stone bridge that separates the nave from the choir area.

Historical sites in Paris Quartier Latin

The Quartier Latin combines Roman ruins, medieval churches, and historic universities. The Arènes de Lutèce displays Roman origins, while the Sorbonne and Collège de France represent academic tradition. Between old libraries and botanical gardens, narrow streets lead to hidden squares and traditional cafés.
