Construction of Saint Lazarus Cathedral began in 1120 to accommodate pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela, replacing an older cathedral dedicated to Saint Nazarius.
The tympanum of the Last Judgment, created by sculptor Gislebertus, presents detailed figures illustrating biblical scenes for medieval worshippers through stone carvings.
Located at Place du Terreau in central Autun, the cathedral opens daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM throughout the year.
The cathedral's sculptures survived the French Revolution when local clergy covered them with plaster in 1766, considering them outdated at the time.
