Autun, Administrative division in Saône-et-Loire, France
Autun is a territorial commune in Burgundy with remains of Roman architecture and medieval buildings. The layout combines both periods with walls, squares and narrow lanes.
The foundation occurred around 2,000 years ago as a replacement for Bibracte, the main settlement of the Aedui. The new site was meant to establish Roman influence in the region and grew into a center for administration and trade.
The name Augustodunum meant city of Augustus, connecting the place today to its Roman foundation. Visitors walk through old neighborhoods where medieval facades and Roman foundations create a layered past.
Most Roman sites are open access and located within a short distance of each other in the town area. Visitors planning to see the museum should allow enough time to examine archaeological finds at a comfortable pace.
The ancient theater held around 17,000 spectators and ranked among the largest structures of its era. Its hillside location provided natural acoustics that remain apparent today.
